High-power EV charging station protection

Full-throttle solutions for your fastest EV charging stations

The electric vehicle industry is all about fast, reliable power that doesn’t compromise the environment in pursuit of convenient, personal transportation. High-power charging stations are a popular system within the industry that helps EV owners get up and go whenever they need to hit the road.

These systems are in high demand as they boast faster charging times than a standard charging station. But what happens if your high-power chargers are affected by a transient voltage event?

Your EV company risks a negative reputation, costly repairs, and even litigation or other negative effects related to damage done to people or electric vehicles using unprotected chargers.

To protect your chargers and your company, invest in power quality protection DEHN, a longstanding industry leader. With more than 100 years of experience under our belts, we bring effective EV charging solutions right to your door so you can focus on maintaining high-quality, high-power chargers for electric cars.

Life in the fast lane: The difference high-power electric vehicle charging makes

Why are high-power charging stations so important?

The world continues to shift further into electric reliance in search of reliable renewable energy sources. This switch is happening fast, and for the next generation, electric vehicles may even be their only option.

These new systems require a faster charging speed, more powerful chargers, and more prominent charging in both public and private spaces. With DC fast chargers power outputs ranging between 150 to 350 kW charging speeds, these charging stations can increase an EV battery from zero to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Although high-power charging is fast, it is not immune to power quality disruptions like transient voltage, which can affect both high-power and standard charging stations. It only takes a simple surge to knock out your chargers – high-powered or not.

How transient voltage slows down even the fastest chargers

As a planning engineer or charging park operator, you know the importance of these convenient charging options and work hard to meet increasing demands for their installation.

You’ve put a lot into ensuring your high-power AC and DC fast charger is operational, and you take the responsibility of serving the nation’s EV industry and EV users seriously. So why would you put it all on the line by not protecting your electrical systems from transient voltage?

When an electrical event occurs near or within an unprotected EV charger, this can lead to disaster. If the threat is external, like a direct lightning strike, a fire could consume your AC/DC fast charging park and all the cars in it.

According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes have a power output of about 30,000 amps of electricity in a single strike. That’s about the 2.5 kV dialectic strength of an electric vehicle - meaning a single surge caused by lightning could render your system inoperable.

In the case of internal transient voltage, the overvoltage could result in costly damage to your chargers, as well as damage to connected EVs and injury to users that your company could be liable for.

Additionally, in public high-power charging parks where people may wait for their cars to finish charging, step and touch voltages are extremely dangerous.

Without proper grounding, equipotential bonding, lightning protection, surge protection, and other power quality solutions in place, damage from one or more of these events is a question of “when,” not “if.”

Luckily, DEHN has solutions. We work with you to develop tailored protection for both AC charging and DC charging facilities. Our surge arresters and other surge protection devices and grounding systems are designed to protect every aspect of your high-power station from the internal electrical equipment to EVs and drivers.

Charging infrastructure must be reliable above all else. Don’t let power quality disturbances tarnish your systems and your reputation as an industry leader. Contact DEHN today and schedule a risk assessment. We’ll help identify existing and potential threats to your chargers so you can make an informed decision about how to protect them.
